chapter two

Dill had left us to go back to Meridian. Today was my first day of school and Miss Caroline Fisher was my teacher. Apparently, I had started the day off bad when Miss Fisher hauled me up to the front of the room and started to hit my palm with her ruler and then she made me stand in the corner. Jem had told me to leave him alone while school was in session, which meant even if I saw him in the halls I could not even say hey to him. Miss Fisher told me that Atticus had to quit reading to me and teaching me how to because that was taught in the higher grades. I told Atticus about this and we still both sit in the rocker and read The Maycomb Tribune every night. In the same day I got into trouble again because Miss Fisher wasn't understanding what Walter Cunningham was trying to say about how he didn't have lunch money or why he didn't have shoes and when I tried to explain she pulled out the ruler again. The Cunningham's do not borrow anything from anyone and definitely don't have the money to pay anyone back so therefore Walter did not take Miss Fisher's money.
