chapter thirty one

Later that night I took Boo upstairs to say goodnight to Jem, then I walked him home. He went inside and I never saw him again. I tried to always look at the world through his point of view. When I got home Atticus was in our room. He took one of Jems books' off of the self and read to me until I went to sleep.

chapter thirty

I took Boo and we went and sat on the front porch while we listened to Atticus and Heck argue. Heck was trying to say that the death was accidental. Atticus on the other hand was arguing that Jem doesn't need to be protected by the law. The remark that I heard Heck make about the whole situation is "Let the dead bury the dead"

chapter twenty nine

I started to tell everyone what had happened. Then Sheriff Tate showed me the costume that had a knife hole in it. I told him about the man that carried Jem home and pointed to the man in the corner. I didn't really get a good look at him but when I did I noticed that it was Boo Radley.

chapter twenty eight

On the way to the pagent Cecil Jacobs jumps out of the bushes and scares me and Jem. When the pagent was over we heard a bunch of rustling behind us, thinking it was Cecil we kept walking. All of the sudden someone starts running behind us and Jem tells me to run. I started to but when I did my costume made me loose my balance. Jem came up behind me and started to drag towards the house. The attacker pulls him back and he begins sceaming. Once the screaming had ceased I crawled on the ground trying to find Jem, but out of the light I saw a figure carrying Jem home. I got there and told Aunt Alexandra and she calls Dr. Reynolds and Atticus called Heck Tate. Later, he informs Heck that Bob Ewell is laying under a tree with a knife stuck in his ribs, dead.

chapter twenty seven

Everyone is worried for their own safety because Bob has been stalking everyone that is connected to the case. The school play was tonight and I dressed up as a ham. Jem walked me to the school because Atticus and Aunt Alexandra were to tired to attend. Bob starts to walk behind Helen Robinson every time that she goes to town and whispers comments behind her back.

chapter twenty six

Today we learned in school about Hitler and how the holocaust became to be. The whole trial is still lingering with me. I brought it up around Jem and he went off on me. He became really mad and told me to never bring it up again. Right away, feeling afraid to say anything else I ran to Atticus for comfort.

chapter twenty five

September was rolling in and as me and Jem was sitting on the back porch a just happened to see a roly-poly bug moving across the porch. Jem told me not to smash the bug because it hadn't done anything to me. He was beginning to become more like a girl to me everyday. Jem had convinced Atticus to let us go with him and Calpurnia to the Robinson's house. Bob Ewell is overheard saying that since Tom is dead there "is only one down and about two more to go."

chapter twenty four

It was one day in August and Aunt Alexandra had her missionary circle over. We were all sitting there when Atticus had came in. He had told me, Calpurnia, Aunt Alexandra, and Miss Maudie that Tom had tried to escape and was shot seventeen times. Then he told Calpurnia that she would be accompaning him in telling the Robinson family about Tom's death.

chapter twenty three

Jem and I was both worried about the threats that Bob had made to Atticus, although he wasn't. Tom Robinson had been sent to a different jail and Atticus felt okay about this. Atticus had said that one of the Cunninghams had tried to get Tom some slack but when I asked Atticus if I could invite Walter over for supper Aunt Alexandra tells me that the Finch's don't mess around or talk to trash. Jem had to walk me out of the room where I wouldn't get to fired up.

chapter twenty two

That night, Jem started to cry at the way the verdict came out the way it did. The next day a whole crowd of black people brought us alot of food to our house. Mrs. Maudie invites us over for some cake and tells us about what happened after the trial. She said that Bob Ewell had attacked our father that morning, spat on him, and swore revenge.

chapter twenty one

Calpurina walked into the court room and delivered a note to Atticus and tells him that he has not been home since noon. Someone tells him that we are in the colored section and he tells us to go home and eat supper. We beg him to let us stay to hear the verdict, but he tells us to follow Calpurnia home and eat supper and that we could come back later.

chapter twenty

When me and Dill had entered the courtroom, Atticus finished going over the evidence and now makes a personal appeal to the jury. The physical evidence suggests that Bob Ewell, not Tom Robinson, beat Mayella. He then offers his own version of events, describing how Mayella, lonely and unhappy, committed the unmentionable act of lusting after a black man and then concealed her shame by accusing him of rape after being caught. Atticus begs the jury to avoid the state’s assumption that all black people are criminals and to deliver justice by freeing Tom Robinson.

chapter nineteen

Tom Robinson got up on the stand and started to testify. He claims that Mayella asked him to come and fix a broken door and when he got in her room, she started hugging and kissing on him. Around that time she started screaming and her father came to her window calling her a whore and threatening to kill her. Tom then fled from the house and Sheriff Tate was called.

chapter eighteen

Mayella Ewell testified next. She had told Atticus that she called Tom inside the fence one evening and told him that she would give him a nickel if he could a broken door. She led him to her room and from there he stood in a car and Mayella started to hug and kiss on him and that is what her father saw.

chapter seventeen

Mr. Ewell got on the stand to testify. His prediction of the story was that he was outside and all of the sudden heard Mayella screaming. He went to her window where he saw Tom raping her and when he started to scream, Tom scattered.

chapter sixteen

The trial begins today. Jem, Dill, and I all tried to wait until the whole town was jammed into the court room so that Atticus wouldn't see us. We had to sit up on the balcony, but from there you could see the whole courtroom. Judge Taylor presided over the case today.

chapter fifteen

One evening the sheriff, Heck Tate, and about four other men come to the house. They tell Atticus that although the trial is nearing Tom Robinson has been placed in the Maycomb County Jail and is concerned about a lynch mob. Later that night, Jem tells me that Atticus and Aunt Alexandra have been arguing about the trial; however, she almost accused him of being a disgrace to the family.

chapter fourteen

The trial of Tom Robinson had came up and everywhere we went the townspeople were always whispering something about us. One night Jem and I got into an argument because he tried to lecture me. Atticus sent us to our rooms where I found Dill hidden under my bed. He had told us that he had ran away from home because his mother and new father did not give him any attention. We had to tell Mrs. Rachel .

chapter thirteen

Aunt Alexandra comes to our house with some unexciting news. She and Atticus had discussed it already and that she was going to stay with us for a while. I really hoped that she would not make me start wearing dresses and sitting lady like. Ladies all over the twon baked her cakes and sent her things as a great big welcome. To Aunt Alexandra Jem and I don't have any pride for our family or anything relating to it.

chapter twelve

Jem had to start going over to Mrs. Dubose house everyday to read to her. I always decided to go with him. Dill had written me a letter that day. He had told me that he was going to stay in Meridean and that he would come back, get me one day, and that we would be married for the rest of our lives.

chapter eleven

Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose was an elderly woman who lived down the road from us with no one but Jesse, a negro girl who stayed and helped take care of her. We would always walk by her house on the way to meet Atticus and she would start screaming at us about what a shame Atticus is, how he is an unsuitable parent, and so on. One day Jem was fed up with it, so he took my baton and went crazy on her plants and tore up her whole entire yard. Atticus made him go and apolgize.

chapter ten

Atticus was getting older and could spend more time with Jem and me playing. Our father never did do anything exciting that we could go to school bragging about like all the other kids did. All Atticus did was sit in an office and defend people. Uncle Jack gave us our Air Rifles for Christmas and Atticus told us that we could shoot anything except a mockingbird. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird, what has it done to us but produce wonderful music for us to listen to.

chapter nine

I had made a promise to Atticus that I wouldn't get into anymore fights. I wanted nothing more but to punch Cecil Jacobs right in the yapper when he said all Atticus did was defend Negroes. My family went to Finch's Landing for Christmas with Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Jack, and our cousin Francis. As usual all Aunt Alexandra did was yell at Atticus and me for not dressing like a lady. The yelling really continued when I punched Francis in the face for talking about my daddy.

chapter eight

Mrs. Radley died that winter. When Atticus returned home from seeing her we were more concerned about Mr. Arthur than her death. All of the sudden Jem started screaming and hollering that it was the end of the world. Atticus turned around to face the window and explained to us that it was snowing outside. Maycomb county never has snow and we didn' t know what it was. Then we started coming up with all kinds of ideas on how to build a snowman and who to make it look like, so happy as could be we got started.

chapter seven

Jem stayed silent for about a week still shocked and terrified of that night. Atticus had tried to get me to crawl under his skin but he wouldn't let me. I hated the second grade but, Jem reassured me that it would get better as I went up in grades. One day after school, we went by the tree and found some blocks of soap with children carved into them. One looked like Jem and the other looked like me. The only person that we could think of was Mr. Avery.

chapter six

One night Jem, Dill, and I went on an adventure. We were still trying to peep into the Radley place since that was the most fascinating thing we had to do. Jem and I balanced Dill on our hands while he tried to look into the side mirror, but he didn't see anything. We went around to the back window and a shadow appeared. Running we went but Mr. Radley was out of the house and started shooting at the sky. When we went under the fence Jems pants got stuck. Then was the moment that I became truly scared.

chapter five

Today was different from each other day because that was the day that Jem and Dill decided to exclude me from their plans. I saw Miss Maudie sitting on her front porch and decided to go over and give her a visit. Miss Maudie hated to stay indoors just like me and so from then on since I was staying on the front porch with her all summer long.

chapter four

The rest of my school year seemed to last forever. Now the Dewey Decimal System was now world wide in the state of Alabama. One day coming home from school I saw something hanging out of a knot hole by the old Radley tree. Jem and I inspected it and found a wad of bubble gum. I snuck it away and didn't let Jem see me do it. Later that night I was smacking on it when Jem asked what it was. I told him it was the wad of gum that I found in the tree and then he snapped on me saying that I shouldn't eat things that I find. Jem and Dill came up with the idea for us to play Tom, Sam, and Dick. We again decided to go and try to peep in the window of the old Radley place and see if we could catch a glimpse of Boo.

chapter three

The very same day that I took up for Walter, I caught myself rubbing his nose in the dirt until Jem came by and told me to quit. Jem and I came up with the idea to take Walter to our house for some supper that night where Atticus and him talked all night nearly about the farm and school. Walter had not passed the first grade yet because he has to stay at home during the spring and help his father harvest in the crops. I was rude to Walter and Calpurnia recongized that and scolded me for it.

chapter two

Dill had left us to go back to Meridian. Today was my first day of school and Miss Caroline Fisher was my teacher. Apparently, I had started the day off bad when Miss Fisher hauled me up to the front of the room and started to hit my palm with her ruler and then she made me stand in the corner. Jem had told me to leave him alone while school was in session, which meant even if I saw him in the halls I could not even say hey to him. Miss Fisher told me that Atticus had to quit reading to me and teaching me how to because that was taught in the higher grades. I told Atticus about this and we still both sit in the rocker and read The Maycomb Tribune every night. In the same day I got into trouble again because Miss Fisher wasn't understanding what Walter Cunningham was trying to say about how he didn't have lunch money or why he didn't have shoes and when I tried to explain she pulled out the ruler again. The Cunningham's do not borrow anything from anyone and definitely don't have the money to pay anyone back so therefore Walter did not take Miss Fisher's money.

chapter one

My name is Jean Louise Finch. My mom died when I was two, but I felt like her absence never really had a really big impact on me. Atticus is my father who is a lawyer that alot of people try and put down only because he defends negros. My brother Jem and I are very close and he does not let anything happen to me. Our best friend is Dill who stays with his aunt Mrs. Rachel over the summer every year. We all have fun while trying to spy on the old Radley Place and try to get a good glimse of Arthur Radley. The kids just call him Boo though. I am always ready for the summer because in Maycomb County that is the best time of the year.
